Tahiti backpackers generally curse at the prohibitive cost in travelling around the islands. This is one of the truly beautiful South Pacific havens with great exploring opportunities in the outer islands but simply getting to these off the beaten track destinations will cost a small fortune. And supporting your stay is not going to be cheap either.

Tahiti is the main island of French Polynesia and has high mountains with beautiful tropical scenery. There are few nice beaches although the black sands found on both the north and south coast are unusually attractive. If you like hiking you'll find some great walking tracks on Tahiti, particularly on the remote Tahiti Iti at the eastern end of the island. The international airport is just south of the capital Papeete on the north west coast and the town has some small backpacker guesthouses where you can get cheap rooms.

Most backpackers head to the beaches and slow pace of life on Moorea Island, a 1 hour ferry ride from Papeete Town. The coast between Hauru Point and Haapiti on the west coast offers the most affordable accommodation. Another backpacker hang out is at charming Fare Town on Huahine Island which is the most traditional of the Society Islands. Bora Bora is generally too commercial to appeal to the backpacker crowd but those looking to soak up the stunning views and beaches and willing to pay an even higher premium for their accommodation will find a few moderate places to stay, albeit not on the beachfront.

If you want to experience a slower less commercial way of life, head to the Tuamotus Atolls, in particular Rangiroa and Fakarava atolls. Theses huge lagoon islands have quaint fishing villages, picturesque palm fringed beaches and some of the best snorkelling and diving in the South Pacific. Pensions can be found near most villages alongside beaches.

For those looking for a real adventure though, the mysterious Marquesas in the far north of the Group and the Australs in the far south of the group will appeal. However, getting to these islands will prove too expensive for most, with both groups taking almost 3 hours to reach by plane. For those who do venture this far, traditional villages, ancient archaeological sites and stunning and wild coastal scenery await. Both groups have budget Pensions.
